Really neat findings on prediction markets.

I may be misreading the study, but I think the key learning was that geographic proximity biases people in the same way. That's not necessarily bad for telecommuters. In fact, mightn't it favor them?

I took it as a quantified support for the value of the proverbial water cooler talk. Being offsite simply means less data, which I personally tend to see as being worse off.

I see. I think being offsite means less data. That means both less information and less noise.

I guess it depends on the thing being predicted, and the value of the community opinion.

[And I figure it's quantified evidence of the effect of the proverbial water cooler talk. Not so much the value.]

One might heartily agree with the value of 'water cooler talk' without excluding telecommuters from that venue.

Point to Point and Point to Multipoint IM (desktop to desktop, realtime) serves the identical purpose, with a HUGE advantage. You can save the conversations for future reference.

You might want to test your 'micro geopraphy' theory with an IM study. Just be sure its realtime, point to point, and point to multipoint.

Mr Chen

A superb blog.

There is a grand way to get teams of ppl to operate effectively as a team regardless of the distance, the technology and the
project culture

It begins with a team collaborative building a grand (top down) plan beginning with the goal, then the specific objectives
and how the team operate as a team.
